Six of the Best: Poetry / Writing Opportunities

SpeedPoets Zine open for submissions

Brisbane’s longest running poetry event is now calling for submissions to its monthly zine. SpeedPoets is a not-for-profit organisation that distributes its zine free of charge at the monthly event. As a result, contributor copies are not able to be provided. To submit, send up to three poems in the body of an email titled ‘SpeedPoets Submissions’ to geenunn(at)yahoo.com.au (replace (at) with @ when typing address). Preference is for poems of 30lines or less. For people wanting a copy of the zine, they are made available for the very reasonable price of 5 x 65cent stamps for people in Australia and $4USD for overseas contributors.

Stilts

Stilts Issue #2: Legs Like Shotgun Barrels is now available to read online. I have two new poems in the issue – Goldie & Lady vs. Gentleman – alongside some of Brisbane’s finest, including Pascalle Burton, Krissy Kneen & Ella Jeffery. This is what I love most about Stilts; it is dedicated to publishing the voices of its hometown. So if you want to cut yourself a healthy slice of Brisbane’s literary pie, Stilts is full of flavour!

The Launch of Stilts #2: Legs Like Shotgun Barrels

Stilts is launching their second journal, legs like shotgun barrels, next Wednesday March 14, featuring new writing from Krissy Kneen, Rebecca Jessen, this Lost Shark and other Brisbane-ites, alongside original illustrations from Simon Cottee. To celebrate they’re hosting a night of confessions and inviting guests to bring along short pieces of writing on this theme.

The night will also feature readings from Stilts contributors including Pascalle Burton, Oliver Mol, Rowena Grant-Frost, and Samuel Maguire.

So don’t be afraid, tuck your darkest, or not so-darkest, confession in your hip-pocket and head on out to Black Bear Lodge (1st floor 322 Brunswick St, Brisbane).

Door entry is $5.
