While I have been leading the summer ginko group through their marvellous Snake Weather, I have also been taking part in our Autumn collaborative poem, this time with Ashley Martin, Cindy Keong and Julie Beveridge. To mix things up a little, we decided to write a Triparshva. Enjoy this first bite…

The City We Build: A Poetry Adventure

Inspired by those childhood favourites, Choose Your Own Adventure Stories, QLD Poetry Festival (QPF) and if:book Australia joined forces in 2012 to commission three exciting poets – Julie Beveridge, Chris Lynch and Carmen Leigh Keates – to write a series of poems that traversed the glorious landscape of Fortitude Valley.

TCWBOriginally, handbills were designed with QR Codes and distributed at the QPF 2013 book store in the foyer of The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, where each journey began. These handbills invited readers to scan the code, read the poem and then make a decision where to head next. The project was so successful, that the good folk at QPF wanted to extend the project… so now we have, The City We Build: A Poetry Adventure.

This extraordinary, enhanced ibook was launched last night on the deck of Riverbend Books and is now available as a free download. As well as the original poems, the book features the photography of Cindy Keong and an opening essay by QPF Director, Sarah Gory.

It is wonderful to see projects like this embracing new technology and pushing the boundaries of poetry publishing.

Tickets for Riverbend Poetry Series on sale now!

The Riverbend Books front deck has become synonymous with poetry in Brisbane over the course of the last eight years, hosting the annual Riverbend Poetry Series in collaboration with QLD Poetry Festival and QLD Writers Centre. Here’s a little bit about the poets…

Vanessa-PageVanessa Page is launching her full length debut, Confessional Box. Vanessa is a Brisbane-based poet who hails from Toowoomba in Queensland. In 2011 and 2012 she was named runner-up in the Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Prize for an unpublished manuscript for The lost art of penning you a love note and Confessional Box. In April 2012 she launched her first micro-collection of poetry Feeding Paper Tigers through Another Lost Shark Publications.

Confessional Box is her second collection of poetry, published by Walleah Press, combining the best of Page’s two shortlisted Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Prize manuscripts, Confessional Box is an extended love letter to place, heart and memory.

“Vanessa Page writes with the complex simplicity of an artist like Paul Klee – her language is ‘skin, papered/over skin’. There is an arresting music to this book, worked at deep pitch, performed with great skill and a compassionate vision.” — Robert Adamson

lawrenceAnthony Lawrence has published thirteen books of poems, the most recent being The Welfare of My Enemy (Puncher & Wattmann, 2011) which was shortlisted for the Judith Wright Calanthe Award and the Age Book of the Year Awards. His books and individual poems have won many of Australia’s major poetry awards, and his work has been translated into Italian, German, Japanese and Slovenian. He lives at Casuarina, on the North Coast of NSW, and teaches Reading and Writing Poetry at Griffith University, Gold Coast.

Zenobia-FrostZenobia Frost is a Brisbane-based poet and critic with a PhD in burning the candle at both ends. In 2012 she was invited to tour with the Queensland Poetry Festival Regional Roadshow; then, in October, she spent a week at Varuna, the Writer’s House, coaxing her debut manuscript into shape. Zen edits with OffStreet Press, Cordite Poetry Review, and Voiceworks Magazine, and she enjoys long walks in graveyards, incisive verse, theatre, and tea.

CYOPA-2Choose Your Own Poetry Adventure, a co-production of QPF and if:book Australia, is a journey through the byways and the streets of the Valley. Weaving language into the physical spaces that we walk around daily, these poetic trails combine language and landmarks to showcase Fortitude Valley in a whole new light.

Choose Your Own Poetry Adventure has three poetic journeys created by three Brisbane poets: Julie Beveridge, Carmen Leigh Keates, and Chris Lynch.

Carmen Leigh Keates’ collection One Broken Knife was published in Brisbane New Voices III, 2012. Her verse novella, Second-Hand Attack Dog, was commended in the 2011 Alec Bolton Prize for an Unpublished Manuscript.

Chris Lynch’s poetry has appeared in Blackmail Press, page seventeen and Islet. He recently edited The Tangled Bank: Love, Wonder, and Evolution, an anthology of speculative fiction, poetry, and artwork about evolution.

Julie Beveridge is a poet and cultural producer. Her collection, Home is where the Heartache is (Small Change Press), was her first collection of haibun. Her follow up collection, home{sic}, was released in June 2012.

The riches of Australian poetry: five exciting releases from 2012

2012 was a year of riches, with some stunning Australian poetry collections released. Some of these books have not left my bedside, their words always circling. So before 2013 kicks into top speed, let me share with you a handful of books that would make fine companions to the books already on your shelves.

Asymmetry is a book that celebrates the exhilaration of language and life. Written in the year after Coleman had a stroke that left him without language and the full use of his body; the poems in Asymmetry provide ‘lightning flashes’ of insight into the poet’s healing process. I have read this collection cover to cover many times over and with each reading, comes a release of pure joy.

Winner of the 2011 Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize, Powell’s words step lightly through the natural landscapes of Finland and Australia and the luminous landscapes of intimacy, desire and memory. I will finish with a book that is very dear to my heart, yes, it’s one that I published. So I’ll hand over to Michael Fitzgerald-Clarke to capture the essence of the collection:

home{sic} is a book of journeys: we are taken to a number of places on the planet, to both Australian locations and North American ones.  Beveridge’s perceptive powers of observation are acute. These are travelogues with hard, sometimes jagged edges.  Yet these edges are leavened with a wisdom that resonates with deep psychological truths. As home{sic} reaches its climax on the other side of the Pacific, Beveridge invites us to be, if not defacto God parents for her as a 21st century Eve, then, in a secular sense, partakers of her future journeys with her to-be-born son.  This is an invitation proffered with rich humanity, and a powerful, overarching sense of the joy of life.

Another Lost Shark 2012 Tour: La Mama Poetica

This week the family are packing up the warm clothes and wet weather gear and heading to Melbourne for a few days, culminating in a reading at the legendary, La Mama Poetica on Monday July 16. La Mama Theatre is located at 205 Faraday Rd, Carlton and the box office opens at 7:30pm with the live poetry starting at 8pm.

MC’d by the delightful Andy Jackson and Anna Fern, the night features readings by Melbourne stalwart, Myron Lysenko, the enigmatic Laura Jean McKay, the Melbourne launch of home{sic} by Julie Beveridge and of course, this Lost Shark. And to keep everyone warm and moving, DJ Lapkat will be bringing the poetic noise!

Should be an incredible night, so if you are anywhere nearby, get along!

The 90’s Are Alive! Or Are They? … Yes.

(Neither a review of Chris Cornell live at QPAC, nor a memorial rant about the 90’s.)

There was a lot riding on Chris Cornell’s Monday night show at QPAC. It was either going to reaffirm or destroy my ideal of the 1990’s. A man alone on stage (save for half a dozen or so guitars, a turn table and Jeff Buckley’s red telephone) had two hours to cement in me the 90’s as one of the 20th Century’s most influential decades for songwriting and music culture.

Why, in 2011, I hear you ask, does she decide to question this decade – when until now she has happily concluded that all women should aspire to be either Suze Demarche or Linda Perry, that all songs are pop songs, that there is no alternative music genre, that Coke does own and produce Pepsi (ok, so that one is just a corporate conspiracy theory that I have, it makes sense though right?), that television is the purest form of broadcasting, that culture is dead and its bones are slowly turning to dust – forming tiny particles that will spark a revolution?

Well, we all experience a few major turning points in our lives and I am heading for a biggun. In a couple of short weeks I’ll be bringing a new little human into the world – so I have a birthing suite playlist to compose!  And as my entire CD collection has been relocated from our dingy spare room (now a beautiful nursery) and has taken up residence in a fist full of green shopping bags in our hallway, I’m left to ponder how so much of my understanding of music and culture is wrapped up in all these discs that were produced in the 90’s.

So I needed something truly of the decade to guide me once and for all, to tell me if there is any point in me unpacking those bags of CD’s in the hall, to give me a sign that girls in spaghetti strap dresses with white undershirts and doc martin’s are the purity of the past that I need to pass onto my son. And who else but the man who is truly a voice of his time, a man who wrote for and fronted Temple of the Dog, Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden and Audioslave.  Who better to tell me but Chris Cornell (what with Boyz To Men on a touring hiatus after a fake tanning accident and Soul Asylum never really managing a comeback)?

Regardless of the why, I am happy to report that the 90’s are very much alive. In my mind, in disposed, in disguise, as no one knows.

Cornell is a voice of his time (of any time in fact) – and on Monday night he shot the breadth of it across a playlist that spanned all of his musical incarnations as well as seamlessly inserting a few telling covers throughout his set, namely Springsteen’s ‘State Trooper’, The Beatles’ ‘Ticket To Ride’, Zeppelin’s ‘Thank You’ and CCR’s ‘Long as I Can See the Light’.

Cornell wore his influences on his sleeve – his own two plus decades worth of songwriting all logical extensions of these influencing pop songs.

So today? Well I’ll be dusting off a few jewel cases and sonically going back in time to create the perfect 90’s birthing playlist … want to know how to get from Muddy Waters to Mudhoney, from Perry Como to the Cosmic Psychos, from Little Patti to L’il Kim in three simple steps?  Stay tuned.

Dada Doesn’t Catch Flies (but it has caught poets)

The delightful Fiona Bell of Dada Doesn’t Catch Flies, has been firing questions at some of the local artists who will be hitting the QLD Poetry Festival stage. So far she has chatted with Carmen Leigh Keates, Nicola Scholes, Ghostboy & my lovely wife, Julie Beveridge (yes, that’s her arm below).
