Hold Back the Water Fundraiser: What we achieved

It has been a big few weeks of poetry…

First there was the gig at Riverbend Books, then Confit Bistro and just today, the mighty SpeedPoets celebrated 10 years of keeping poetry fast in Brisbane. And binding the three events together has been the Hold Back the Water Fundraiser, a raffle raising money for the many people in QLD who suffered great loss in the January floods.

In total we raised $1135, which will be donated to the QLD Premiers Disaster Relief Fund.

I want to thank Sally Cripps for donating the two beautiful framed prints as well as Confit Bistro, Riverbend Books, QLD Poetry Festival and all of the authors who gave books for donating prizes. Your generosity is deeply appreciated.

I would also like to send a special thanks to Cindy, Sarah & Lee-Anne who did an amazing job selling raffle tickets.

And to everyone who dug deep and gave to this worthy cause, thank you… it has been amazing to see the poetry community pull together and make this happen.

And so to the winners…

The Curve of Forgotten Things

Last night, the world should have been at InSpire Gallery Bar taking in the wonderfully loose sounds of Sheish Money & Namedropper, who were joined on stage by a number of local poets; dropping their words in and out of the bluesy jams that Sheish & co. play so well. There was a wildness in the air last night, a sense of something urgent, that creative spark… I got up and performed a handful of my own poems and a handful of poems by one of my favourite Australian poets, Max Ryan. It was rocking! And today the rush is bound to continue as Sheish & I head back to InSpire to celebrate 10 years of SpeedPoets, or as we like to say, 10 Years On Speed!

So to slow things down a little this morning, I watched the gorgeously filmed (and scored) short, The Curve of Forgotten Things, which takes its name from the title of a Richard Brautigan poem. If the sun is not shining in your part of the world, then ths may just bring the warmth you are looking for. Deerhunter’s ambient score pulses and soars and Elle Fanning is mesmeric. The perfect Sunday morning viewing…

And for all you Brautigan lovers… here’s the poem, from which the film takes its name.

The Curve of Forgotten Things

                                              Things slowly curve out of sight
                                              Until they are gone. Afterwards
                                              Only the curve
                                              Remains.

Digging Baron Field

I had a chat with Brisbane country-blues troubadour Baron Field last week in the lead up to the release of his debut album and his feature at this Sunday’s (March 6) SpeedPoets 10th Birthday Gig. We talk about the albums that keep pulling us in, the writing process, how Ipswich is a fine fish & chip town, great places to check out live music in Brisbane and the curse of flat-footedness. There is also a link to Baron’s bandcamp site where you can listen to a number of tracks off the album. If you like a poetic lyric, are not adverse to finely picked guitar (or even a banjo), enjoy all the smoothness of a gravel-cured voice, then this man just may be your new favourite singer-songwriter. Countdown to SpeedPoets 10th Birthday Bash

This week is a big one…

Tonight’s gig at Riverbend Books is almost sold out (a few tickets left so get there early!!!), tomorrow nights gig at Confit Bistro is being filmed for Channel 7′s The Great Southeast and then on Friday night I fly down to Melbourne to feature at The Castlemaine Poetry Reading (at The Guildford Hotel), hosted by Ross Donlon on Sunday, Feb 27.

Big times indeed…

And to add to that excitement, I am counting down the days until SpeedPoets celebrates its 10th birthday on Sunday March 6 at InSpire Gallery Bar (71 Vulture St. West End). SpeedPoets has kicked off the year by revamping their website and the first person to step on to the virtual stage is one of the 10th birthday features, our lovely lady from 4ZzZ’s Waxing Lyrical, Fern Thompsett. Hold Back the Water: A Disaster Relief Fundraiser

The Brisbane poetry scene is about to explode back into action with a number of gigs in late February / early March. Dates for your diary include:

Tuesday February 22:

Riverbend Poetry Series, featuring Pascalle Burton, Alan Wearne & the launch of Brisbane New Voices II, which brings together the debut collections of John Koenig & Chris Lynch. Tickets are $10. Full details here.

Wednesday Feb 23:

Confit Bistro (4/9 Doggett St. Fortitude Valley) presents The Back Room, featuring performances by this Lost Shark and poetic guitar-slinger Sheish Money + local indie-rock luminaries, The Stress of Leisure. Entry is free and doors open from 6pm.

Sunday March 6:

SpeedPoets rolls back in to InSpire Gallery Bar (71 Vulture St. West End) to celebrate its 10th birthday. As always, doors will open at 2pm and entry is a gold coin donation. Stay tuned for announcements of features artists…

And one of the things that will bind these events together will be the running of the ‘Hold Back the Water: Disaster Relief Raffle’. I have again been overwhelmed by the generosity people have shown in donating prizes for this fundraiser. So drum roll please… the two major prizes are:

Draw 1 includes:

A 60 x 95cm framed print by renowned photographer, Sally Cripps which captures the sky, just west of Blackall (Western QLD) before the rains hit (see image below)

A dining voucher for Confit Bistro
A ticket to Opening Night of QLD Poetry Festival 2011 (Friday August 26)
A $30 gift voucher for Riverbend Books; and
A double pass to the Riverbend Poetry Series Event II, featuring Max Ryan, Vanessa Page, David ‘Ghostboy’ Stavanger & Julie Beveridge (Tuesday April 19)

and a Book Pack, valued at over $100.

Both prizes are valued at over $400 and should be enough to get any poetry lover salivating!

Raffle tickets are priced $5 each or 3 for $10 and will be sold at all three events, with all money raised donated to the QLD Premiers Disaster Relief Appeal. The raffle will be drawn on Sunday March 6 at the close of SpeedPoets and the winner notified.

Final SpeedPoets for 2010 this Sunday (December 5)

SpeedPoets wraps up nine wordbending years this Sunday December 3 at InSpire Gallery Bar (71 Vulture Street, West End), with a gig that is bound to leave you more satiated than being left alone with the christmas ham!

Softly spoken, poetry sojourner Nick Powell will read from his brand spanking, limited edition chapbook and the honeyed voice of Shelley Evans (The Horse Darkly), will deliver a spellbinding set of acoustic songs.

There will also be the regular feast of Open Mic, live sounds from the SpeedPoets engine room of Sheish Money, free zines, raffles/giveaways and much, much more!

So make sure you are there to raise a glass to Brisbane’s longest running poetry event, as this will be the last gig until March 2011 when it will be time to celebrate 10 years of SpeedPoets… big times ahead.

SpeedPoets, Sunday October 3: feat. Robin ‘Archie’ Archbold

Well, I am heading off for the week to walk the city from my mind… and when I return, SpeedPoets will be kicking up a storm.

Brisbane’s longest running poetry event, SpeedPoets keeps fanning the flames of poetry at InSpire Gallery Bar (71 Vulture St, West End). October will feature spoken word dynamo and multiple Slam winner, Robin ‘Archie’ Archbold. The last time I saw Archie perform was at the Goolwa Poetry Festival where he popped a button in someone’s drink. It was very special!

There will also be the regular live sounds from Sheish Money, free zines, raffles/giveaways and the hottest Poetry Open Mic Section in town. So be sure to pack a poem or two in your pocket and get yourself heard!

SpeedPoets Open Mic Championship this Sunday

While Brisbane is in the midst of festival fever, SpeedPoets keeps things hot, hosting its annual Open Mic Championships at InSpire Gallery Bar (71 Vulture St, West End) this Sunday September 5. And to make the afternoon extra special, there are three interstate feature acts, that you don’t want to miss!

Fresh from her appearance at QLD Poetry Festival, Tiggy Johnson will perform a feature set alongside fellow Melbournite, Randall Stephens. And to round out the southern trio, the delightful Andy White will make a special appearance playing a set of songs and poems; his first performance in Brisbane in more than 2 years. Here’s a quick taste of Andy’s work:

There will also be the regular live sounds from Sheish Money, free zines, raffles/giveaways and much, much more!

The Open Mic Championship Rules are:

1. Sign on for the SpeedPoets Open Mic Competition will commence at 2pm and cease at 2:30pm

2. Each poet will be given 3mins to perform/read one poem (without musical accompaniment or props).

3. Each poem read must be the original work of the poet.

4. Two judges will be selected to choose a shortlist of at least 5 poets for the second round

5. Poets selected for the second will be given another 3mins to perform a second poem. This poem cannot be the poem they performed in the first round and again, must be their own original work.

6. A winner and runner up will be selected by the judges from the second round performances.

7. The winner will receive $100 and the runner up $50, with a range of book prizes to be presented to commended performances.

(NB. Judges decisions on the day will be final and no further corresspondence will be entered into)

So start fine tuning your poems and your performance! Doors open at 2pm – along with sign up for the Open Mic Competition.

Paul Squires: true original, gone…

Today at SpeedPoets (InSpire Gallery Bar, 71 Vulture St West End), I will read a tribute to the late Paul Squires. Paul was a spirit with such positive force… a spirit that touched many and spanned the corners of the universe.

One of the poems I will read today is Listen. from his book, The Puzzle Box. This was the poem that called to me when the news of his passing hit… If you can make it along, I know Paul would love you to be there to keep his words alive.

Paul, wherever you are friend, as the great Sam Hunt says, ‘tell the story, tell it true, charm it crazy.’ Here’s an excerpt from his poem, Listen:

Listen.

Listen. Not to me. On a cool, clear night like this the traffics are louder.
They hurrr by like bundles of compressed air whirlywinding someone
home. The old man next door has gone to bed. He coughs his awakeness
and will soon snore his dream.

SpeedPoets team up with Page Seventeen

The first Sunday of the month is sacred in these waters… nothing (or let’s say next to nothing) comes between this Lost Shark and SpeedPoets. But the first Sunday in August is even a little more special than usual, as SpeedPoets, Brisbane’s longest running poety/spoken word event is teaming up with one of this country’s finest literary journals, Page Seventeen to offer one local writer the chance to have their work published in issue #8 as well as win a pretty cool little book package including back issues of Page Seventeen and a range of other quality journals and poetry collections.

What are we looking for? Poems that dance on page and stage. Poems that create their own music, that beat their own drum. Poems that beg to be heard again and again and again and… well you get the picture.

The rules of entry are simple:

1. Sign on for the Page Seventeen/SpeedPoets Open Mic Competition will commence at 2pm

2. Each poet will be given 3mins to perform/read their poem (without musical accompaniment). Each poem read must be the original work of the poet.

3. Each poet must place a typed/neatly handwritten copy of their poem in the judges box at the conclusion of their reading.

4. Judges will consider the poem in its oral and written form.

5. The winning poem will be published in issue #8 of Page Seventeen and the poet will receive a book/CD pack.

(NB. Judges decisions on the day will be final and no further corresspondence will be entered into)

The day will also host the launch of my fifth collection, Ocean Hearted, as well as live sounds from the SpeedPoets engine room of Sheish Money. There will also be free zines, the monthly raffle and much, much more…

So for your monthly poetry hit, get along to InSpire Gallery Bar, 71 Vulture St West End this Sunday, August 1 from 2pm. I wouldn’t be anywhere else!
