Live at Brisbane Square Library this Friday

Throw open your calendars and clear the decks for this Friday evening – 5:30pm to 6:30pm – as it’s one of those all too rare occasions that sees Sheish Money and I team up for an extended feature set. And what makes it even more special is Sheish and I, will be joined by Moveable Feast members, Giselle Sheehy and Chris Churchus, to make the library shake a little!

Graham Nunn live at SLQ

The thought of playing with this mighty 3-piece in a library on a Friday night has got me itching; I can’t wait for the band to let their swaggering riffs fill the room and to let my words find the spaces between it all. And as we like to keep things spontaneous, each gig feels like walking a tightrope; though I have to say, there is no better safety net than the fullness of Sheish’s guitar roar.

Joining us on Friday will be madcap sketch comedy group, The Sexy Detectives. With each of us will playing three 8-10 min spots, there’s bound to be some lively interplay.

So come along and watch how Sheish and co. turn my words into gold; find out how far The Sexy Detectives can stretch your smile; and help those library walls shake a little. It’s Friday, and we couldn’t think of any place better to invite you!

Your mid-week live poetry fix

It’s National Poetry Week, so here’s a healthy hit of live poetry…

First up, here’s a link to listen to Poetica’s ‘National Poetry Week’ show, featuring the work of some of this country’s finest new voices – Michelle Dicinoski, Fiona Wright, Eileen Chong & Anthony Lynch; as well as the work of the late Rosemary Dobson and QLD stalwart, Bruce Dawe.

You can listen to the full show here.

Next, here’s a clip from QLD Poetry Festival 2012, featuring Pascalle Burton and Tylea. This piece closed Tylea’s set and the festival, so it’s a real pleasure to relive it again. [In other Tylea news, you can catch her at the Dowse Bar on Sunday Sept. 16]

While we are talking all things QLD Poetry Festival, here’s a link to the official photo roll of the event. Again, it’s wonderful to relive what was a poetically monumental weekend!

And last of all, here’s a clip of me reading my poem Beyond at the now sadly defunct, Back Room readings at Confit Bistro. As always Sheish Money is beside me doing what he does best…

[Big thanks to Francis Boyle for supplying the video footage]

Another Lost Shark 2012 Tour: Let the Words Take Flight

After sitting in on drums with The Lucky Ones last night at The Back Room, I am eager to hit the mic for the first home leg of the 2012 touring season this coming Friday.

David Stavanger (aka Ghostboy) has put together an all-star jam featuring some of the hottest poets and performers this city has to offer to launch the 2012 Australian Poetry Slam.

Aptly titled, Let the Words Take Flight showcases the word in all its glory with short sets from curator of the highly successful ‘Spoken’ shows  Mandy Beaumont; Slammer extraordinaire Robin ‘Archie’ Archbold; fresh from Canberra, co-creator of Bad!Slam! No!Biscuit!, Adam Hadley; the swoon-inducing duo of Betsy Turcot & Eleanor Jackson; folk-punkers, Mr & Mrs Woolf; bush poet and entertainer, Noel Stallard; host of the JamJar Slam, the irrepressible, Darkwing Dubs; the always outlandish, Pascalle Burton; founding vocalist of The Winnie Coopers, The Educator; and the oceanic swell of Sheish Money & this Lost Shark.

All this plus performances by hosts Tessa Leon and Ghostboy w/ Sir Richard Grantham.

Fireworks will have nothing on this gig!

Here’s the details:

Live from the Audio Vault #5: Once more with video!

Here’s another clip from the Ocean Hearted Project, performed live at QLD Poetry Festival in 2010, with live music from Sheish Money w/ Namedropper and visuals from Cindy Keong. Watching this brings back so many memories… Cindy and I caused a bit of a stir on the banks of Cabbage Tree Creek when we shot these images. I am sure the local fishermen thought we were from some kind of cult! Viewpoints was highly commended in the Poetronica Award at the 2010 Melbourne Overload Festival and I am very pleased that it is finally available to view.

Live from the Audio Vault #4 – this time with video!

Back in 2010, I started working with Cindy Keong and Sheish Money on a show that would feature several of the poems from Ocean Hearted, live music and photography. We performed the show at QLD Poetry Festival that year and it still stands out as one of (if not) the best gigs I have ever done. Cindy shot countless photos over the months leading up to the festival and put them together as short films to be screened while we performed. This one is particularly important to me, as the poem was written for my Grandmother and showcases the picturesque landscape of Toorbul; a place that instilled a love of the ocean in me forever. I hadn’t watched this since the show in 2010, so it was a thrill to take it in all over again… Enjoy.

Live from the Audio Vault #3

I am still buzzing after last night’s FreeVerse: Page meets Stage event. It was a thrill to share the stage with Pascalle Burton and create a poetic back and forth for the audience that gathered, while Ghostboy prowled, pondered and kept  the event rolling with his razor wit and immeasurable charm. Truly a night to remember! If you are in Brisbane, I can wholly recommend getting along to the next event in the series.

One of the real highlights was working with Pascalle to record a version of my poem Anniversary from Ruined Man, which has inspired me to once again lift the lid on the audio vault. This time, I offer up a track that did make it to The Stillest Hour, a regular in the live set with Sheish (though ironically, it never sounds like this anymore):

Live from the Audio Vault #2

The hinges on the vault may be a little rusty, but what’s inside is still shining bright. This track was recorded somewhere between 2006 & 2008 at Sheish Money’s home studio. It was one that Sheish fought for to make it onto our album, The Stillest Hour, but for one reason or another, it found itself on the cutting room floor. So for the very first time, here’s Sheish and I performing, Train of Thought.

Happy listening!

Live from the Audio Vault #1

Recently I have been sorting through our sprawling CD collection, alphabetising and culling and as a result I have found a number of audio gems that I plan to feature on the blog each week. Poet, songwriter, guitar slinger, collaborator, singer and all round musical whizz, Sheish Money and I have been playing together and recording for almost a decade and many of these newly found recordings have never seen the light of day. The thing I love most about them is that they have that absolute ‘live feel’. There are snippets of conversation and laughter as we regularly surprise ourselves. It is all spontaneous, all predominantly one take. Just the two of us in a room, with Sheish then adding some bits and pieces here and there post recording. It’s a process that has brought us both a great deal of joy, so I hope that feeling is infectious.

The first track from the audio vault is a poem from my collection, Ocean Hearted:

Next stop Tasmania…

It’s been another massive year for this Lost Shark, with trips to Melbourne, Blackall, Murgon & Hervey Bay. And in just over a week, Sheish and I will be flying south for a guest spot at the 2011 Tasmanian Poetry Festival.

The program has just been released, featuring a poem from each of the guest poets including, Andrew Burke, Les Wicks, Sandra Thibodeaux & Petra White. To get a taste of each of the fine poets who we will be sharing the stage with, head to the Festival website. I just know we are going to have a ball. Here’s another video of us performing Let it Rain / Meditations on a day when the river at this year’s QLD Poetry Festival (the footage on this one is much clearer)

and a video of Sandra Thibodeaux, collaborating with poet/cellist, Kevin Gillam.

So, Tassie… here we come!

The Back Room’s All Star Menu: featuring Pascalle Burton

Tomorrow night is your last chance to dine out on the fine food and live arts served up by, The Back Room at Confit Bistro. One of the highlights of the all-star menu is avant-garde performance poet musician-lady, Pascalle Burton.

Pascalle flirts shamelessly with poetry, music and visual art. She has performed at many venues and festivals both in Australia and overseas.  She recently played around with David Stavanger, Nathan Shepherdson and reversible poetry on her project, The Outlandish Watch, which is available on 7” vinyl. She performs in The Stress of Leisure, who will be October’s Resident Musicians at the Brisbane Powerhouse and soon releasing their own 7”, Sex Time. Her Lavender Room Zine-in-a-Matchbox series has been nominated in the 2011 Golden Stapler Awards and in 2008, Small Change Press published her debut collection, A Vast Laugh.
