Deciduous

Stars are pinned between leaves
and the heart is a hammer;
the road frays like a hymnal ribbon
as I follow it, winding
through country towns.

But I can’t leave here without you.

The customs we once had
like wearing red on grand final day
are signposts -
coloured leaves floating on the water
hesitant before the rain comes.
