Friday Night Lights Project: Week #21

Brisbane turned on the gloom for the first day of Winter, but nothing can dampen the spirits of a Friday night. Cindy was watching traffic in the rain, Ashley was listening to French Pop Songs and this Lost Shark was pondering the death of a kite.

Happy 21st Friday Night Lights!

He throws rocks at the mango tree:

bats rise up from the golden fruit, mocking
those that have gone to ruin

the kite, caught in the high branches
its torn wings beating the gleam from twilight.

A Temperate zone:

French pop song on the player
Red tailed hawk
killed by lightning

and moths make pinwheels
in the porch light c’est la
vie, c’est la vie

  1. Do love those lines “He throws rocks at the mango tree:
bats rise up from the golden fruit, mocking
those that have gone to ruin” and an excellent photo once again…have a great weekend!

  2. Something in the poets’ imaginations seems to be keeping the birds from flight – the red-tailed hawk and the black-shouldered kite. (or a toy kite, perhaps – nice double meaning) Must be the rain. Love Cindy’s photo this week, and the tone of detached resignation in the last stanza in Ashley’s poem.

i was actually thinking of a toy kite, but with ashley’s poem, the bird imagery becomes really strong. these poems work so well together. thanks as always for your insightful words BB,

  3. nice..i LOVE the pic and i love the moths making pinwheels
in the porch.. and i wish we had mango trees over here..

oh yes, they are such a beautiful thing… and the fruit, well, that is heavenly. glad you enjoyed the collaboration.

Mango are still fairly exotic here. My grandpa discovered them during the war (he was in Myanmar at some point). I have a vivid childhood memory of him slicing one for me. The whole thing: appearance, texture, taste was overwhelming for a girl more used to apples, pears and the everyday Florida orange!

Believe me, after all these years, the experience of cutting into one still seems exotic! Such a luscious fruit…

  5. Love the tone of all 3 pieces – resignation

  6. wonderful. all of them.

of the posts that makes me sad Australia is so far out. could this new “end of the world” shift it a bit closer?
