On the Island (part iii)

Most people know nothing of silence.

The sun is coming down
and the tide up

the grammar of clear water
will have a calming effect.

In the dying light, we remember
the winter of locusts

and how children are taught
to ignore flowers.

We’re moving carefully backward
through the bad weather.

Soon it will not have begun.

    lulling.
Love the coupling of the lines.
This is unfolding gorgeously.. that last line is stunning!

  2. A great addition to the series, Graham – that line

    We’re moving carefully backward
    through the bad weather.

Is a real standout. I like the cautious hope within it, especially with the sadness the rest of the poem holds

  3. For me…the final line was just brilliant!

    WHAT ABOUT NOW

    Most people don’t existe
    Except when they’re invented
    For whatever someone needs
    To build a new landscape
    Or supposed to be new

    Most people and I
    Are twinning shadows
    Parts of my mind
    Which still believe
In a soon that never lived
