Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize
Named in honour of a distinguished Queensland poet, the Arts Queensland Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize is committed to encouraging emerging Queensland poets. Now in its 7th year, this prestigious prize for an unpublished poetry manuscript comes with a total prize money of $3,000:
1st Prize: $3,000 plus a publishing contract with UQP

Now in its 11th year, this prestigious prize for an unpublished poem (or suite of poems) of 100 lines or less comes with total prize money of $4,000:

They are excellent opportunities. You should enter the poem below, it is brilliant and would have to stand a good chance. Entry is free which is cool but by hardcopy snail mail so I shall have to alert my secretary/agent/manager/publisher and get them onto it. I reckon this year’s festival will be very interesting and lively.

hi graham – enjoying yr blog posts and thanks for this latest one – just an aside to paul on the ‘val’ and the ‘shapcott’ – they are not free to enter, both have a $20 application fee which seems fair considering the amount of admin required in major prizes and judging.
also, having been highly commended twice and receiving a second prize once in the ‘val’ i can say that the competition is very stiff and winning is so so very difficult…but it is well worth pushing yourself to enter and engage.
i like to know who is judging each year, wondering graham, if the judges will be advised soon?

Oh, $20? I shall have to start saving up. And I agree, knowing who the judges are will certainly be a factor in deciding which poems. If they get thousands of entries they can hardly choose one simply on the quality, taste will have to come into play.
